Sun of an Open Office

Thursday April 23, 2009 09:07

Now with Oracle owning Sun, people are looking what it means to Open Office.

A team of developers "forked" Open Office, and added new features to it. This was possible because Open Office is open source. Sun owns Open Office, but Oracle is buying out Sun, and given that Oracle does not have a name in open source, many people feel that this could be threat to long term progress of Open Office. If Oracle cancels or abandons Open Office, we'll have to rely on other people to continue to work on the code. It will be up to them to ensure that we keep an open free alternative to Microsoft Office, whether Oracle supports Open Office or not. One risk though might be when a lot of new development might be needed after Microsoft's next round of file format scrambling. Compatibility with newer version of actual Office might become a little sluggish...
"Go-Oo" (sounds like something Matthew would say) has some interesting new features, check it out!
